Kafan al‑Mayyit (Shrouding)
Finalize the shrouding with care and dignity. Follow your local masjid lead for any differences.
Before you begin
- Confirm the kafan area is clean and ready.
- Ensure ties, cloths, and clean sheets are prepared.
- Maintain privacy and keep the ‘awrah covered throughout.
Shrouding layers
- Lay out the three cloths in order, largest to smallest.
- Place ties beneath the cloths at head, torso, and feet.
- Add any customary scenting per local guidance.
Positioning
- Transfer the body carefully onto the shroud area.
- Keep the ‘awrah covered with a cloth while arranging layers.
- Align the head, shoulders, and feet with the cloth edges.
Wrapping sequence
- Fold the right side of the first cloth, then the left.
- Repeat for the second and third cloths in the same order.
- Tie the shroud at the head, torso, and feet.
Final checks
- Ensure the shroud is secure without being tight.
- Confirm nothing is exposed and ties are neat.
- Prepare for transfer to the janazah area.
