Kafan al‑Mayyit (Shrouding)

Finalize the shrouding with care and dignity. Follow your local masjid lead for any differences.

Before you begin

  • Confirm the kafan area is clean and ready.
  • Ensure ties, cloths, and clean sheets are prepared.
  • Maintain privacy and keep the ‘awrah covered throughout.

Shrouding layers

  1. Lay out the three cloths in order, largest to smallest.
  2. Place ties beneath the cloths at head, torso, and feet.
  3. Add any customary scenting per local guidance.

Positioning

  1. Transfer the body carefully onto the shroud area.
  2. Keep the ‘awrah covered with a cloth while arranging layers.
  3. Align the head, shoulders, and feet with the cloth edges.

Wrapping sequence

  1. Fold the right side of the first cloth, then the left.
  2. Repeat for the second and third cloths in the same order.
  3. Tie the shroud at the head, torso, and feet.

Final checks

  • Ensure the shroud is secure without being tight.
  • Confirm nothing is exposed and ties are neat.
  • Prepare for transfer to the janazah area.
